Katarina Witt started ice skating at the age of five. Her success allowed her to show her skill and was accepted into the Karl-Marx-Stadt Special School for gifted kids. The school where she was enrolled she got to know the teacher Jutta Muler. Witt was able to make her debut year in 1982 after she placed second at the World Championships held in Copenhagen. The grace and elegant style of Witt caught the eye of the world and she's been a dominant figure skater ever since. Olympic triumph Katarina Wit took home gold in women's ice skating at the Sarajevo Winter Games 1984 after a highly competitive and intense contest. It was her victory from four years prior that was a bit more tense. In fact, she did not win the contest for free skating, but won gold based on performance during the mandatory figure and short program. Witt was the only woman ever since Sonja Haenie who was an apex figure skater. Hall of Fame After enjoying the success of an actress, Witt returned to the sport in the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Games. Although she didn't get a single medal she delighted fans with her seventh place finish. Witt received her induction to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
